Think and Grow Rich ( in Martial Arts )

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Think and grow rich in.. speed, power, gold medals, etc.

Here is an underlying principle that will apply in all aspects of life- Just when you feel like giving up, DONT. Make sure to keep going and you will be sure to succeed.

It’s like I was told in cross country – “sprint up the hill, when others are walking” / “sprint passed the finish line, dont let up when you are 5 feet from the finish.”  If you follow these principles you will come out stronger and on top of your opponents.

In the last part of practice or competition everyone gets tired, but it is those who truck through and do not quit that succeed because it is right when you are getting hit the worst or feel most down on your luck that the prize you been fighting for is closest within reach.

Keep this in mind next time you feel exhausted and just fight through it a little bit longer and you will see what I am talking about.

Vitamins and Supplements for Martial Arts Training

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Here is a brief analysis of vitamins and supplements for martial arts training based off of experiences and analysis of results on other athletes.

Are vitamins and supplements essential to be a good martial artist and skilled at your craft? The answer is absolutely not. Can they be beneficial though? Yes, and let’s take a closer look into this.

Vitamins and supplements should be exactly that – supplemental to your diet and to your training. If you are just getting started in martial arts and do not do any other heavily strenuous sports activity such as running marathons, lifting 500lbs weights, etc. I would say that a simple multi-vitamin and a healthy diet would suffice. Vitamins in general can be good for us because even if we eat reasonably healthy meals we still may not get all the essential elements we need in our daily consumption. That being said, keep in mind to drink lots and lots of water.

Now I do believe for the professional/highly top 5-10% competitive level these added vitamins and nutrition can play a more important role. I am talking about people that train so much that (almost) no matter what they eat they will not gain weight and they burn off more than they consume. In these situations your body is breaking down and rebuilding muscle every day so getting high volumes of the appropriate proteins are neccessary. For these people I would recommend some sort of protein powder or drink along with multivitamins, l-glutamine, and msm/glucosomine at the very least.

In the end, most people can achieve most goals without supplements, but used in the right way, there is definitely added value in taking the right vitamins to boost your martial arts training results.

BJ Penn vs. GSP II

http://video.ufc.tv/94/94_30SEC_PROMO_MIX.mov

This figh has been talked about for months now, UFC officially sent word November making BJ Penn/Georges St.-Pierre 2 official for Jan. 31 in Las Vegas for GSP’s welterweight title.

Penn, GSP and UFC President Dana White at the Waikiki Shell  for a rally, previewing the event.  The full press release for the fight is below.

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – In March 2006, top welterweights Georges St-Pierre and BJ Penn fought for the division’s No. 1 contender’s spot. St-Pierre earned a razor-thin split decision and went on to win the Ultimate Fighting Championship® welterweight title. Penn dropped to the lightweight division and won the organization’s 155-pound title.

Now they’re about to do it again. But this time, there’s much more at stake.

UFC® lightweight champion BJ Penn looks to be the first fighter in history to hold two UFC championships at the same time when he faces Georges St-Pierre for the UFC welterweight championship at UFC 94: ST-PIERRE VS. PENN 2, live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, January 31, 2009.

Two champions, two of the best in the world, pound-for-pound, and this time – two more rounds for the welterweight championship.

“This may be the most anticipated rematch in UFC history,” said Dana White, UFC President. “Their first fight was an epic battle of two of the best pound for pound fighters in the sport. After that fight, St-Pierre would go on to win the UFC World Welterweight title and Penn would go on to win the UFC World Lightweight title.

Now these two champions meet again with a lot of pride and St-Pierre’s title on the line. This fight will be talked about for years to come.”

Tickets for UFC 94: ST-PIERRE VS. PENN 2 will go on sale Sunday, November 16 at 10 a.m. PT and will be priced at $750, $500, $300, $200, $100 and $50. Tickets are available at the MGM Grand Garden Arena box office, all Ticketmaster locations, and by telephone at 800-929-1111 or 702-891-7777 and all Las Vegas Ticketmaster locations (select Smith’s Food and Drug Centers, Macy’s West at the Fashion Show Mall and Ritmo Latino). To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (702) 474-4000.  Tickets also are available for purchase at ufc.com, www.mgmgrand.com or www.ticketmaster.com.

A special Internet ticket pre-sale will be available to UFC newsletter subscribers Saturday, November 15 starting at 10am PT.  To access this presale, users must register for the UFC newsletter through ufc.com.

UFC 94: ST-PIERRE VS. PENN 2 will be available live on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. EST/7 p.m. PST on iN DEMAND, DIRECTV, DISH Network, TVN, Bell ExpressVu, Shaw Communications and Viewer’s Choice Canada for a suggested retail price of $44.95 for standard definition or high-definition broadcasts (where available).

One of the sport’s most dynamic athletes, Georges St-Pierre (17-2) will be prepared to go five rounds to defend his UFC welterweight championship. The Montreal, Canada native has won his last four fights and nine out of his last 10. Most recently, the popular champ defeated number one contender Jon Fitch in a five round war, and at 27, he is in the prime of his brilliant fighting career and looking to send Penn back to the 155-pound weight class.

“I’m very honored to fight BJ Penn and very excited because it’s the fight that everybody wants to see, including myself,” said St-Pierre.  “It will be one of the most anticipated fights in UFC history, and I’m glad and humbled to be a part of it.”

The welterweight division is old hat for Hilo, Hawaii’s BJ Penn (14-4-1). The current UFC lightweight champion earned the welterweight title in 2004 with a submission victory over UFC legend Matt Hughes. But Penn has been even more untouchable since moving back to the lightweight division. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has won his last three fights against three world-class foes in Jens Pulver, Joe Stevenson and Sean Sherk. But the only thing on Penn’s mind right now is a return to the welterweight division for a healthy dose of revenge.

“For that fight, I was at a point in my career where I didn’t prepare as well as I should have,” Penn said. “During the second and third round I realized that I ran into someone that wanted it more than I did…Now, I’m very prepared to go five rounds.”

What is the Warrior’s Spirit?

Friday, January 9th, 2009

The Warrior Spirit

The Warrior Spirit comes up
when a person has trained
in Martial Arts and has reached
a level where their attitude,
posture, body language, eyes,
mind and intent,
have transformed into
something different.
Something beyond the average person.

In the presence of one who has
the Warrior Spirit,
The ordinary person will feel a difference.

The stronger spirited one could easily overcome
The weaker spirited person just by a look.
But this is not the mean spirited look of popular films.

The stronger spirited one will lead the weaker one
Who will follow without hesitation. In trust.

The Warrior Spirit is compassionate.
It is impeccable.

The Warrior Spirit cannot be acted.
It happens naturally. It is not forced.

Each one on us has the Warrior Spirit,
But it is hidden.
We need to explore and reach into
Our deepest self to find it.

When a person has this spirit it shows.
To others it is indescribable.
They simply feel this person
Is different from others.

When you begin to understand this spirit,
you will be able to see the others who have it.

The warrior spirit is calm.

Facing danger without giving the opponent
The feeling of fear.
Its calmness is
Not disturbed under pressure.

The principle of “movement within stillness
And stillness within movement” is
The training of the Warrior Spirit.
