Jackie Chan Vs Pat Morita in the New Karate Kid Remake

Friday, January 16th, 2009

From E Online – 1/16/09

We know Jackie Chan has the martial arts moves of a master…but how is he at trimming bonsai?

The Hong Kong-born action star is in talks to take on the role of Mr. Miyagi in an upcoming remake of The Karate Kid, per the Hollywood Reporter.

The premise would be similar to the 1984 original, in that Chan would be playing mentor to a teen who’s being harassed by bullies and is in need of both philosophical guidance and some sweet self-defense moves.

Will and Jada’s kid, Jaden Smith, who cut his drama chops alongside dad in The Pursuit of Happyness, is set to don the karate gi (and perhaps the showerhead costume) once worn so proudly by Ralph Macchio.

But the question remains, how do you think the swift-footed Chan—who at 54 is still out there doing his own stunts—will stack up against the late Pat Morita, who played the sage sensei Mr. Miyagi in four Karate Kid films and had a knack for saying it all with nothing but a stare?

Don’t Forget About Van Damme

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Call it a Comeback All this talk about Yip Man and we’ve all forgotten about the our earlier heroes.  Back in the early 90’s when you were a kid and Chan hadn’t even made it to the American market yet, there were only a few good guys out there.  Arnold, Stallone, and Van Damme.  you might not like to admit it, but he is definitely one of the top players in the game.  Stallone is a phenomenal writer and a formidable actor, Jackie Chan is a fantastic actor in Asia, but let’s face it,he has no range in his buddy movie niche in the U.S..

Jean Claude Van Damme has the most basic action sequences but he has the best acting and the most trademark moves, which just make you want to root for him when he’s using them and winning after a ridiculous and embarrassing beating that any normal man would not be able to survive.  This is why Van Damme’s newest movie and his upcoming career due to it might be taking a new direction.  one of less action and more acting.

The Nutcracker The Cheapest Martial Arts Attack

Monday, January 12th, 2009

The nutcracker.

Is it or isn’t it a cheap move?  The answer is obvious.  think about it.  Is fish hooking the mouth or scratching the face or even twisting the nipple cheap?  Yes, yes it is.

Bruce Lee would do it though and if he would do it, that somehow justifies it for a large fraction of martial artists who dangled from the balls of a dead trash talker.  Frankly speaking, he is a pioneer but it doesn’t mean his fighting style isn’t cheap.  The fact of the matter is, if you want to win a fight, you should do anything and everything you can to get the one up on your opponent.  For all you know he’s going to  take a bottle to your head, or even worse his buddy behind you takes a bottle to the back of your head.

So the end of this contention turns out like this: A kick to the balls is cheap as ever. A kick to the balls is pretty much as cheap as it gets when it comes to talks about moves to defeat an assailant.  But if you don’t know martial arts and are being attacked by more than one person, deploying a ball kick I guess isn’t so cheap.  It’s just a matter of how much and how fast you want to win the fight.  And of course…how cheap you are.
